Fremantle

The port city of Fremantle, long ago absorbed into the greater Perth metropolitan region, still maintains its vibrant character and charm.

The weekends here are alive with markets, outdoor dining and pubs full of history.

Fremantle remains a working port, and you can see the big ships unloading from many vantage points in the city.

It is also where cruise ships dock if they come into Perth.

Getting There

Fremantle is less than 30 minutes from the centre of Perth, making it easy to drive in a hire car.

Fremantle is also well connected by public transport with the train line from Perth Central Station regularly and buses from different parts of Perth depositing you in the centre of Fremantle.

Fremantle is straightforward to walk around, but a free CAT bus service operates at 20-minute intervals along a loop from South Terrace and Marine Terrace between Fremantle Station and South Beach.

A visit to the Fremantle Markets is a must on the weekend. Sample food from around the globe and buy weird and wonderful knick-knacks from an eclectic mix of vendors.

South Terrace is Fremantle’s café strip with alfresco dining, ice cream parlours and retailers selling Australiana, clothes and other goods.

There is a beautiful collection of indigenous art galleries off South Terrace selling high-quality indigenous paintings and sculptures.

Visit the first prison constructed in the new Swan River Colony, the Roundhouse, which reminds us of Western Australia’s convict past.

You can view modern prison accommodations at Fremantle prison, which even offers the possibility of an overnight stay for the whole incarcerated experience.

Continue on South Terrace to South Fremantle to enjoy a further, perhaps cooler, café strip and a collection of restaurants. This sophisticated strip has emerged with great new bars and dining options over the last decade and is a great place to go on any weeknight.
